May 2024 Foodbank Drop-off

2024 and we’re still doing it! Foodbank drop-off has been one of FAHWA’s regular initiatives since we started more than four years ago.

It’s our honour to contribute to Foodbank WA’s mission of addressing food insecurity in Western Australia.

Thank you as always to all our generous sponsors and volunteers who made this possible.

FAHWA Charity Event Unites Filipino Community in Bayanihan Spirit to Support International Students

The Filipino Australian Health Workers Association (FAHWA) Charity exemplified the ‘Bayanihan Spirit’ of community cooperation as they successfully led a convergence of Filipino organisations and volunteers to host an International Students Support Fair on June 8, 2024, in Huntingdale, Western Australia.

The event brought together generous sponsors Hope Nursing Services and Melissa’s Filipino Shop and various Filipino organisations, including Oragon WA, Multicultural Community Arts Festival of Western Australia (MCAFWA Inc.), and Filipino Australian Movement for Empowerment (F.A.M.E. Inc.), alongside supportive business and industry leaders and volunteers.

Their combined efforts resulted in the distribution of nearly 80 blessing bags to international students in need, filled with essential food items such as rice, oats, coffee, and canned goods.

In addition to food items, all organisations and donors contributed gently used, quality winter clothing, mattresses, and brand new blankets that the students could choose from and take home for free, providing warmth during the cold season.

FAHWA, in collaboration with Hope Nursing Services, provided free health check-ups, particularly blood pressure checks.

Oragon WA also served free meals and refreshments, and the atmosphere was further enlivened by live music, which encouraged students and volunteers to jam and dance together.

FAHWA Charity Chairperson Aida Oakon, along with partner sponsors and organisations, viewed this event as a pilot initiative for supporting international students. Given its success, the team is considering making it an annual event and expanding it further, especially since this year’s effort was organised in just one week.

The event not only provided material support to the international students in Perth but also highlighted the strength and unity of the Filipino community in Australia.

ST BARTS OUTREACH

FAHWA continues our outreach to support St Barts in the provision of their services to the most vulnerable groups in the community.

We printed hard copies of WA COVID-19 flyers and A4 updates. This information was distributed to users of St Bart’s services.

Some of our valued FAHWA members continue to donate hygiene and food packages to those in need and provided health checks on a one to one basis to flow practice.

OPENING OF THE REMOTE LIBRARY FOR CHILDREN

We are overjoyed to announce the opening of a remote library for children, a heartfelt project sponsored by Fahwa Charity.

This initiative has been one year in the making — a year filled with kindness, generosity, and the shared belief that every child deserves the joy of reading.

A huge thank you to Bella and Books in Perth for their generous donation of used books that formed the foundation of this project. We are also deeply grateful to Fahwa members who shared toys and children’s clothing to bring even more smiles to the little ones.

Special thanks to our amazing supporters:

  • Eden, Rochille, and Hope Services Australia— our monthly donors, for their unwavering support.
  • Kath Macayan, and Remz — for bringing in and donating books from various libraries in Perth.
  • Franco — for using his strength and heart to help carry and move the heavy boxes of books.
  • Edmondo and Shellane — for their generous donations of children’s toys and clothes.
  • Jacqui, Mel T, Beth and Cris Villegas and Renee Watson — for their thoughtful donations of books.
  • Graciella and Michael — for their support and contributions.
  • Our main donorHope Services Australia, for their incredible help in moving the boxes from Australia to the Philippines, making this dream a reality.

A heartfelt thank you as well to LBC Cargo for providing discounted shipping, ensuring these precious donations reached the children safely.

This library is more than just shelves of books — it’s a gateway to imagination, knowledge, and opportunity for children in the village who have had little access to reading materials from abroad. Through your kindness, these children can now discover stories beyond mobile screens, become passionate readers, and dream bigger than ever before.

To everyone who supported, donated, lifted, shipped, and believed in this cause — thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Together, we have opened not just a library, but a door to brighter futures
